College Students & the Bible

Have you ever thought about how the Bible would have been different if it had been written by college students?

• The Last Supper would have been eaten the next morning . . . cold.

• There would have been only five commandments, double-spaced, and printed out in a large font.

• New edition every two years in order to limit reselling.

• Forbidden fruit would have been eaten because it wasn’t cafeteria food.

• Paul’s letter to the Romans becomes Paul’s e-mail to mail@churchatrome.org.

• Reason Cain killed Abel: they were roommates.

• The end of the world occurs at Finals week, not Armageddon.

• Out go the mules, in come the mountain bikes.

• Reason why Moses and followers walked in the desert for 40 years: They didn’t want to ask directions and look like freshmen.

• Instead of God creating the world in six days and resting on the seventh, He would have put it off until the night before it was due and then pulled an all-nighter.

Azusa Street & Beyond

I was visiting the Latino Leadership Circle blog and they were announcing this book and I thought I’d mention that I have a chapter in the book called "The Ladies are Warriors: Latina Pentecostalism and Faith-Based Activism in New York City". I’m one of three women writers in the book. You can order the book here. A press release on the book can be found here. And to find out more about the Azusa Street Activities go here.

A description from their website states: In honor of the Azusa Street Centennial Anniversary, Grant McClung has collected the works of many of the men (and women, my emphasis) who have chronicled or led the Pentecostal movement for the past 100 years and put their essays into a single volume that is considered by many to be the "one central sourcebook on Pentecostal missions and church growth." The book is divided into four perspectives:

  1. History (a visit to Azusa Street)
  2. Theology
  3. Practice (My chapter is under this category)
  4. Future of the Pentecostal missions

Coverof_azusastreet I am really honored to have been a part of this historical rewriting. My name is on the cover among all those men, isn’t that cool!

It is my desire to write my own book after I graduate. Lately I’ve just been working on my dissertation which I hope to submit "a proposal" by the February 1st. If that is accepted, I will be able to go forward in the research and then write it up and I’m done!

Christianity…Does It Really Mean Anything?

The facts are that at this moment, it doesn’t seem so. 85% of the people in our country consider themselves to be Christians. That is about 247 million people but how big of a difference is that 2-4-7 making 24/7, let’s see:

  • Research tells us that among people in North America who call themselves Christian, ost are no more likely to give money to a homeless person on the street than non-christians.
  • Christians are no more likely to correct a mistake if the cashier gives them too much change than non-Christians.
  • Christians have just as many abortions as non-Christians.
  • Christians divorce at a rate that is as high as those who consider themselves non-Christians.
  • Even though there are more big churches than ever before, 50% of Christian churches didn’t help a single person come to personal faith in Jesus.

My Old Boss

My old boss was written up in a Columbia Journal recently about the national compassion grant he received. I had nothing to do with that grant, although we had hoped that it would be something that could be done in South Florida. Unfortunately, they had to stay with NY and Chicago. Whether they chose the cities or were told which cities to work with is up in the air in my mind but I was glad for them.  He deserved this after so many years of struggle. Not to say that they still don’t struggle and its ashame that our people just sucketh in supporting their own people’s organizations. Anyway, I am glad for him. He’ll be visiting us for our church anniversary and sharing a word at our Sunday service. South Florida is going to get a taste of Rev. Ray. I can’t wait!

Website Horror Story

As a church plant, we had a website that was hosted by www.thischurch.org and for the most part it was great. It just looked like a beginner website but everyone always commented on how we had so much information on our site that they liked. I just wanted some more personality to the site and maybe even a flash to send a message. Well, after researching some companies I went with the company that hosts us now and boy that was a mistake! I went with them because they had done Concerts of Prayer NY site, they had great recommendations and they were not as expensive as others but I feel totally dis-gus-ted with them. While some of the folks I worked with were nice people, it does not take away the fact that they were SLOW, unresponsive and STILL haven’t finished my site (waiting for my flash that was purchased ‘done’ already by Highway Video) and the work was done already!!! They also charge you $29 a month before its even LIVE! I didn’t want to pay and was told I did not have to based on their performance but some character who seemed to be Billy Two Times from Da Bronx was his cordial self as he said "should you choose not to pay would you like us to deactivate your site". Oh Lord, the New Yorker (unpastoral) former self in me was creeping up. Anyway, all this to say, if you have a choice don’t use the one we did. You’ll thank me later!

24 & Mental Escapes

Although some might disagree with me, I get into TV shows for mental escapes. With so many things occupying brain space it is great to go blank. The only time that happens when I take Tylenol PM or when I watch 24…having Jack Bauer back is awesome!
